Policies and Procedures

Spokane Children’s Theatre is dedicated to creating a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for everyone. As part of this commitment, SCT provides training for its board, staff, educators, actors and their families, and volunteers serving on artistic teams.

Statement of Inclusion

Spokane Children’s Theatre does not and shall not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion (creed), gender, gender expression or identity, age, national origin (ancestry), disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status, in any of its activities or operations. These activities and operations include, but are not limited to hiring and separation of employment, selection of the Theatre's Board of Directors, actors, volunteers, and any other provision of services. We are committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for all members of our community.

What happens after casting?

When an actor is cast in a production at Spokane Children’s Theatre, both the actor and a parent/guardian are required to attend the Parent/Actor Meeting. During this meeting, an SCT representative will review theatre policies and procedures, safety protocols, and the rehearsal process. Important production information and expectations will also be discussed. In addition to the meeting there are contracts that are gone over and both the actor and parent need to sign and agree to the paperwork.

Anyone volunteer or employee over 18 is required to pass a background check as well as sign a disclosure agreement.

Safety at SCT

Safety guidelines and procedures are shared with all cast members, parents, employees, and volunteers. Spokane Children’s Theatre leadership reviews these expectations with cast members and parents at the required parent meeting before rehearsals begin for each production. These guidelines are also reinforced throughout the rehearsal and performance process.

To help ensure a safe and supportive environment for all participants, the following policies are in place:

• Anyone (parent volunteers, cast members who are 18+, and members of the production team) over the age of 18 is required to complete a background check before participating in each production.

• No one is allowed backstage unless they are part of the cast or crew and have completed the required background check.

• Security cameras have been installed throughout the theatre, including backstage areas, rehearsal spaces, and lobbies, since 2018.

• There will always be a minimum of two adults present at the theatre whenever children are present.

• After rehearsals and performances, parents or guardians must come inside the building to pick up their child to ensure they get safely to their car.

• All cast members are expected to wear shorts and tank tops when changing in dressing rooms. If an actor does not have these items, they must change in a bathroom with a locked door.

These safety guidelines and procedures are reviewed regularly and will be updated as needed to maintain a safe environment for all participants.
